Does anyone think about this important business concept anymore? I mean we spend countless hours on the internet trying to reach people (sometimes literally next door) via Facebook and follow people mindlessly on Twitter et al!!! Sometimes I wonder if the name of Facebook should really have been AvoidFace or just Book since there is no real “Face time” involved! I wonder how “Linked” or how “In” we are if we have never met or sat across a coffee table and talked about business prospects and ideas?
All said and done I think the opportunity cost of social media is profound business relationships. Opportunity Cost means- I’d rather be doing that instead of this!….. and it answers a very important question “Is, this, what I am doing really worth the time and the effort? Would I rather do something else”? With so much time and money spent on online social relations the social meet and feel concept is being rendered a thing of the past. Like, in the past a handshake would seal the deal or the vibes in the room or the body language gave million hints as to how the venture is going to unfold. Lost is the vibe, the body and sign language, the look in the eyes that spoke 1000 words, the hand shake and the pat on the back for an idea shared amongst friends. Now we are content with “Like”ing someone status or expressing our support by re-tweeting. We are down to developing acquaintances instead of friends with the book of one dimensional faces and the blue bird that is never heard singing amongst ever so clamorous tweets that are not his in the first place!!!
